plaxoed!

[Mark Jen's life @ Plaxo]

Goodbye Plaxo!

Well, it’s been 2 years and almost 3 months since I joined Plaxo and this Friday I’ll be moving on. Over the past two years, we’ve done a ton of stuff at Plaxo, including:

I’ve really enjoyed my time at Plaxo – I’ve learned a lot, shipped a ton of product, and worked with amazing people. :D

As for my next gig, I’ll be joining my good friend Terry over at Tagged. There’s a ton of stuff to do over there – and since they’re in PHP/Java, I can probably jump in and do some coding too :). Lunch 2.0 up in SF here we come!

So… should I continue writing my blog here at Plaxoed? I suppose it is past tense, so it could fit as I move on after Plaxo. What do you guys think?

Probably should as tagged.com is already taken: Taggeded?

It’ll be fun working with you again. Lunch 2.0 SF indeed. :-D

(P.S. Plaxo 3.0 which I had no hand in, is pretty cool. People should check it out.)

I think you definitely can’t continue writing at plaxoed.com; because of the name, it’s not about you, so much as it is about plaxo. It’s just wrong to write about tagged stuff under the plaxoed name.

The real question is the one you haven’t asked: should the name of your new blog really be tagged? By doing that, you’re just heading into the same rename situation that you’ve faced twice before, with ninetyninezeros and plaxoed. Why do it again? Why not switch to blog.markjen.com?

Most especially, by naming your new blog tagged, it then becomes something of a pseudo-official voice of the company, and raises its stature within tagged. I don’t know that this is necessarily what you want, unless tagged was specifically interested in, and desirous of, your blogging abilities when they hired you. After all, raising the stature of ninetyninezeros by placing an AdSense ad for it contributed greatly to the readership and profile of ninetyninezeros, which I think ultimately, did not work out well for you. :-(

    jenmarked.com perhaps?

    I’m with Jorg here.

You’re a (normally) smart guy, so I’ll be blunt with you. Naming a blog after your (current) employer is about as dumb as getting a tattoo that says “I love Chachi!” or getting a domain name “fredandjaneforever.com” or choosing a blog name that evokes “bladder” or something lame like that ;-).

Seriously, Mark… hopefully none of us are our jobs. We’re us. Well-rounded people with friends, beliefs, hobbies, passions, opinions, and, yes, cool jobs. Why not name your blog something extensible, something you?! :)

Because MarkJen is a boring name.

Now if it were a cool name like TerryChay…

Well that’s another story entirely. :-D

    Andrew says:

I have to disagree with Jorg and Adam.

Mark Jen, on his own, means very little to me (no offense Mark). But Mark Jen, who got fired from Google, who worked as a product manager for Plaxo, and who now will hold some position at Tagged, means a lot more to me because all those companies mean (or have the potential to mean in the case of Tagged whom I had never heard of till now) something to me. In relationship to those things you create a lot of value that independently you, or I, really only have with our family and friends who already have reasons to care about and (maybe) respect what we have to say.

Your company, your position and your professional experiences are your credentials as far as blog readers are concerned. So branding yourself with those credentials, in my mind, is a positive decision.

In addition, this creates value for your current employer, and prospective employers. You can point to how your blogging creates additional exposure for your company. Free of charge (and marketing spin).

So, Mark, tell us more about Tagged. What will you be doing? Where is the company headed? Why should I be excited about it? Good luck and I hope the career move is a positive one.

P.S. I look forward to reading more on your new taggeded blog. :)

I can’t remember how I even got to your site. I am extremely behind in my computer knowledge. I do have a little interest in HR and that’s how I started to get interested in your story. I would miss your blog, a lot. I read it now and then to stay as informed as possible (for a beginner)about technology. I’m probably not your typical reader (39yo mother of 2) If it moves, I hope you’ll help me find it – like with a big blue link stating “for ‘e-diots’ please click here. Thanks – Tracy
