Goodbye SMT5600, Hello 8125!

My Audiovox SMT5600 hasn’t been doing so hot (frequent reboots, spotty reception) and I also wanted to check out the new Windows Mobile 5.0 “Magneto” OS so last week, Rose helped me order a Cingular 8125. So far, it’s working pretty well; I was able to load up Agile Messenger and Virtual Earth Mobile, but I’m still looking for some apps I had on my SMT5600 that I can’t seem to find the installers for anymore (I used to have Pocket Streets & Trips and SmartPhlow, a traffic tracking app for the Seattle area).

It also took me a while to figure out how to load up a new root cert. For our OWA server, we use a root cert from Starfield (which in turn is signed by ValiCert) and it’s not one of the pre-installed certs. Eventually, I figured out how to do it; if anyone else is in a similar situation, here’s what I had to do:
- Open up our OWA site in IE
- Double click on the “security lock” icon, which pops up a details dialog about the SSL cert
- Go to the “Certification Path” tab and double click on the certs above our cert in the tree
- Go to “Details” and click “Copy to File…”
- Export the cert in “DER encoded binary X.509 (.CER)”
- Copy the .CER file to my phone via USB cable
- Navigate to the file through File Explorer on the device and run the .CER file
This installed the certificate on my phone and now I’m able to access OWA/OMA without a security dialog popping up. This also solved my ActiveSync 80072FED error code.
I also had to jump through a look to get WiFi to work. Normally, if you have a WiFi connection, it supercedes connecting through EDGE/GPRS. However, it seems that Cingular inadvertently screwed WiFi by putting in a proxy for all web requests. Here’s how I got WiFi to work for me:
- Start -> Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections
- Advanced Tab -> Select Networks
- Edit… the “MEdia Net” connection (which is in the first drop down, the connection to use when connecting to the Internet)
- Uncheck the “This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet” box in the Proxy Settings tab. This deleted the value in the Proxy Server text field, which for me used to say “wireless.cingular.com”
EDGE/GPRS still works fine for web browsing, so I’m not really sure why had the proxy setup in the first place… anyone out there have any ideas? Should I put it back when I’m on EDGE/GPRS?

I’ve had an SMT5600 for a little bit now, any tips on apps I should try out?

Oh and if you can find your copy of SmartPhlow that would kick ass.

Just got the T-Mobile version of this phone (MDA) this week and I love it. It’s an amazing device. Enjoy!

Chris - You should definitely get Agile Messenger if you haven’t already
I haven’t had much time to use Virtual Earth Mobile, but I was quite impressed for the 5 minutes I’ve used it so far.

Duke - Yeah, I hear the MDA and the 8125 are pretty much identical devices; I wonder which network has better EDGE/GPRS performance though…

They are the exact same. Both are made by Taiwanese manufacturer HTC, also maker of the infamous Sidekick.

The Cingular proxy is for access to their medianet stuff. There is a favorite to http://home that won’t work if you turn off the proxy. I also recall reading somewhere that having the proxy on is faster over edge. I had to do the same thing you did. Once I got my cert I turned the proxy back on and didn’t have any problems.

What name do you give the exported files? Do you export both the Starfield and Valicert root certificates? Thanks for your help. Even Cingular’s Tier-3 support in Seattle are floundering around the web looking at blogs like this instead of getting help from Microsoft!

Hi Randy, you can name the certificate whatever you want, as long as the file extension is .CER. Then just copy the cert to the device and execute it through File Explorer.
I did add both Starfield and Valicert root certificates, but I think I only needed to add Starfield.
Good luck!

Well, we must have a bad phone, because now I am getting activesync error code 80072f06 (incorrect SSL certificate common name in the Host Name field). I may try swapping out the two 8125s that we bought. Thanks for your advice anyway.

Thanks for the Proxy server tip - my 8125 can finally work on wifi thanks to you. Still can’t get my ActiveSync to work with my OWA though - but love the phone.

Hi Shannon and Randy, Good luck setting up Exchange Active Sync. Here are the best tips I’ve got (I’ve set it up a few times
)
1. Check your Exchange server’s event log. If there are any server side errors, they’ll be recorded here.
2. Do some searches with the EAS error code.
3. Make sure the authentication is set up correctly for both /Microsoft-ActiveSync on the front end server and /Exchange on the back end server. If they are different machines then you’ll want to make sure your auth mode is set to Negotiate.
Good luck!

Thanks for the tips on the certificate - worked for me!!

“Go to the “Certification Path” tab and double click on the certs above our cert in the tree”
When I double click the lock icon I get a box opening up, but the tabs don’t include ‘Certification path.’ They’re General, Forms, Links, Media and Security. Security has a View button to give more info on the certificate, but I can’t figure out how to export it. Any help appreciated!
