Applause. It’s amazing how they were re-inventing the delete metaphor by having the ‘move to trash’ command hidden under a dropdown box. It takes a geek to figure that out and i wonder how many people out there have accumulated years of garbage in the inbox up until now. When they put back the DELETE button my feeling was “was it me that miss the point or them?”
Originally gmail didn’t have one, to make a point: “With 1GB of space, who needs delete? Just use the archive button!” At the time, the free accounts on hotmail and yahoo had something like 10MB limits, so you had to delete constantly - and gmail was trying to get people out of the habit.
Now it’s nearly 2 years later, and the point has been made. And still, a delete button is the a top feature request. I guess it was time to give people what they wanted!
I found the “solution” to the missing delete-button in non-US Gmail accounts. Switch the language of your user interface to “English (US)” and - voilá - there is the “delete” button.

I use the Dutch locale and a Greasemonkey script with Firefox. Works, too!
